Passport to Education
The Passport to Education rewards BC students for their achievements in grades 10-12. Students collect passport stamps from their secondary school, which can then be redeemed at a post secondary institution to help pay for tuition.
Note: Provincially, there are 9,000 Passport recipients per grade. This number is pro-rated for the school based on the student population. This number of passports issued represents approximately 15% of all students enrolled in each grade.
- $250 for grade 10 based on GPA
- $250 for grade 11 based on GPA
- $500 for grade 12 based on GPA.
Passport Eligibility and Criteria:
- Full time enrolment in a public school
- Must be a Canadian Citizen or a Landed Immigrant
- Based on course marks (GPA) for Grade 10 (minimum 32 credits)
and Grade 11 (minimum 28 credits)
- Redeemable at accredited and designated post-secondary
institutions (approved for Canada Student Loans)
Dogwood-District Authority Awards
Dogwood-District Authority Awards are provincially funded awards.
They recognize excellence for graduates who excel in the areas of fine arts, applied skills, physical activity, or second languages
and include:
- $500 cheque, and $500 voucher for use towards post secondary education
- 3000 awards pro-rated to districts/authorities, based on district enrolment
Eligibility and Criteria for District Awards:
- Enrolled in public or Group 1, 2, or 4 independent school
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Must meet graduation requirements
- Must meet criteria determined by the local District Scholarship Committee
- May receive both the district award and provincial scholarship (as well as a Passport award)
- Redeemable at designated post-secondary institutions and approved Industry Training Authority (ITA) providers within 5 years of graduation
Grade 12 Graduation Program Examinations Scholarships
Recognized academic achievement on Grade 12 Provincial Examinations
- $1000 voucher for winners
- $2500 voucher for top 20 winners in the province
- Approximately 5000 students annually
Eligibility and Criteria for Provincial Scholarships:
- Enrolled in public or Group 1, 2, or 4 independent school
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Must meet graduation requirements
- Must earn at least a "B" in English 12, TPC12 or Francais langue premiere 12.
- Based on three best exam scores (86% or higher)
- May receive both the provincial scholarship and district award (as well as a passport award)
- Redeemable at designated post-secondary institutions and approved Industry Training Authority (ITA) providers within 5 years of graduation
District and School Awards
- District Awards are applied for in June of the graduating year and adjudicated in October.
- It is the policy of School District #61 and Mt Douglas that one student does not "take it all"; however, many students do win more than one scholarship as they are eligible for more than one type of award.
- In-school awards do not necessarily require an application
University Entrance Awards
UVic
- 90% average on grade 11 and grade 12 academic courses needed for entrance
- Several awards at $2000 - some may be as much as $6500 renewable for 4 years
UBC
- Academic scholarships for marks only are automatic at various percentages
- There are over 80 Entrance Scholarships offered by UBC for outstanding academics combined with leadership in many facets of school life
- The school can nominate up to 2% of the graduating class for consideration for scholarship
- Every university has different requirements and application processes for scholarships. It is important to check the website of each institution frequently to make sure that all requirements are being met.
Private Scholarships
- Can be any amount
- Administered by various donor scholarship committees, unions, foundations, associations
- You may be asked if you are being sponsored by a school. The school may be asked to limit the number of applicants.
